The Aeolian Singers are a community-based, auditioned, upper-voice choir that has been performing 3 – 4 concerts per season since 1976. Our current artistic director, Heather Fraser, excels in creative programming of mostly contemporary repertoire, with a focus on Canadian female composers, touching on current issues and events in word and sound.
We rehearse on Monday nights from 6:30 – 9:00 pm, in central Halifax, from early September until early June. We have additional rehearsals, workshops and dress rehearsals as required throughout the year.
Concerts, which are mostly self-presented, and dress rehearsals may be held at various venues, and we occasionally perform outside the Halifax Regional Municipality. Members are expected to attend all rehearsals, workshops and concerts and to work on their music in between rehearsals.
We are a not-for-profit society with registered charity status. We are governed by an Executive Committee of choir members and we operate with the assistance of several paid, part-time staff members including our artistic director, accompanist, assistant director and business manager.
Our funding comes from member fees, concert ticket sales, fundraising and grants. In addition to singing, learning music and performing, all choir members participate in fundraising, selling concert tickets, organizing and promoting concerts and general lending a hand with what needs doing.
Choir members pay an annual fee of $425, including a refundable music deposit of $25. The fee is payable in several installments and members are given access to fundraisers throughout the year to assist in raising up to $200 of their fees. Payment options and financial assistance can be discussed with the Choir’s Treasurer.
